In the month of Kartik, Lord Krishna is worshipped as Damodar, the child bound at the waist by Mother Yashoda’s love. Offering ghee lamps to Him each evening while singing the Damodarashtakam is described in the Padma Purana as especially dear to the Lord.

Kartik Maas is called Damodar Month because Lord Krishna is worshipped during this period in His childhood form as Damodara. The name remembers the pastime in which Mother Yashoda tried to bind young Krishna to a wooden grinding mortar after His playful mischief. Although the Supreme Lord cannot be controlled by material power, Krishna allowed Himself to be bound when He saw His mother’s loving effort.
The account, described in the Tenth Canto of the Srimad Bhagavatam, presents a central devotional teaching of Kartik: the Supreme Lord willingly responds to pure love. For this reason, devotees remember Lord Damodara by offering lamps and singing prayers that describe His childhood form and Mother Yashoda’s devotion.

There is no need to make the observance complicated. Devotees may choose practices according to their health, responsibilities and level of spiritual experience. The important principle is to offer regular time and attention to Lord Krishna throughout Damodar Month.

Devotees commonly sing Sri Damodar Ashtakam while offering a lamp during Kartik. This eight-verse prayer remembers Krishna running from Mother Yashoda, being caught by her and accepting the rope around His belly. Singing it with an understanding of its meaning helps turn the lamp offering into personal remembrance of Lord Damodara.
The complete Sanskrit verses, transliteration and explanations are available in the guide to Sri Damodar Ashtakam.
